Dr. Chris Ranger is a Research Entomologist with the USDA-ARS Application Technology Research Unit (ATRU) in Wooster, OH. Dr. Ranger's ongoing projects related to CEA are primarily focused on using principles of chemical ecology, insect behavior, and integrated pest management to develop sustainable tactics for fungus gnats infesting gourmet oyster mushrooms grown under CEA conditions. His projects being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Luis Canas and associated graduate students are addressing resistance mechanisms of oyster mushrooms against fungus gnat larvae, diversity and dispersal of fungus gnats within cropping systems, and alternatives to conventional insecticides. Dr. Ranger is also facilitating research to evaluate sensors for rapidly detecting insect infestations in tomatoes grown under CEA conditions.
